Correct Usage of Manhole Steps

The correct use of manhole steps follows the principle of "Inspect first, operate standardizedly, and prevent risks throughout the process". The core is to ensure the safety of personnel when entering and exiting confined or semi-confined spaces.

1. Before Use: Conduct Necessary Safety Inspections

This is the primary step to avoid accidents. It is essential to confirm that both the environment and the ladder itself are free from safety hazards.

· Check the condition of the manhole steps: Inspect if the ladder body is deformed, cracked, or rusted, if the joints are loose, and if the anti-slip coating or pedals are intact. Ensure no parts are missing or damaged.

· Verify the safety of the working environment: Use a gas detector to check for toxic and harmful gases inside the manhole. Meanwhile, check if the ventilation is adequate. If the environment is dim, set up explosion-proof lighting equipment in advance.

· Prepare auxiliary safety equipment: Wear a safety helmet, anti-slip gloves, and a safety belt according to the operation requirements. Carry emergency communication equipment if necessary.

2. During Use: Strictly Abide by Operating Specifications

Maintain a stable body posture during operation to avoid imbalance or manhole steps damage caused by improper movements.

· Posture for entering and exiting: Grip the ladder rails firmly with both hands, and place feet steadily in the center of the pedals. Do not stand on one foot or lean the body excessively. When moving up and down, maintain the "three-point contact" (i.e., both hands + one foot or both feet + one hand in contact with the ladder simultaneously) and move slowly.

· Prohibit irregular operations: Do not jump on the ladder, climb too fast, or carry heavy objects exceeding one's load capacity. When multiple people enter or exit, they should do so one after another. Simultaneous climbing up and down or passing each other on the ladder is prohibited.

· Pay attention to the ladder's status: If the ladder shakes, makes abnormal noises, or has loose parts during use, stop the operation immediately. Evacuate to a safe area before inspecting and repairing. Do not continue using the ladder until the hidden dangers are eliminated.

3. After Use: Complete Post-Use Tasks and Maintenance

Inspection and maintenance after use can extend the ladder's service life and ensure safety for the next use.

· Clean and inspect: After removing the ladder from the manhole, clean dirt, standing water, or corrosive substances from its surface. Inspect the ladder body again for damage. Report for repair or replace it promptly if any problems are found.

· Store properly: Store the manhole steps in a dry, well-ventilated environment free from corrosive gases. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight or humid environments, which can accelerate rusting. Do not stack heavy objects on the ladder during storage to prevent deformation of the ladder body.
